At BRD we specialise in putting together bespoke simulators. We have a proven track record of delivering on time and within budgets with high quality unique solutions to client requirements.
As a company we spend considerable time keeping up to date with new technology and where items are not available we develop our own solutions and some of these are now subject to worldwide Patents and other pending.
Our highly experienced team operate in a “can do” environment, able to provide innovative solutions to problems. We don’t promise to be the cheapest, but we will tell you honestly what we can do and when.
Following an initial client request we will discuss requirements in depth and produce some initial solutions. From these we will agree a strategy, timescales and budget costings and on approval will develop Project plans, Bills of material, Milestones, and give you a personal contact for the duration of the project.
Examples of Special projects undertaken:
-
Three seater F1 simulator – Requirement was to design and produce a 3 seater interactive F1 simulator for Orange Arrows similar to the AX3 working only from photographs. We had to meet a very tight deadline of 10 weeks, budget and stringent Health and Safety standards .
-
Force Feedback Turntable – our client required that a genuine older style race car, be converted to use the existing pedals and full moving steering, without altering the car and be able to return quickly to normal. Our solution was to develop a Force Feedback turntable, where the front wheels are each placed on small turntables that are connected to a forced feed back motor and the car movements sensed through the normal steering. Special sensors were used to pick up the other driving interactive functions. A virtual reality type of headset was used for driver
visualisation.
-
Formula 4 Racing Boat simulator - Requirement was to supply two replica hydroplane racing boat simulators within 4 weeks. These had to be reduced in size, be easily transportable and fit into limited stand space. The solution was to purchase a damaged boat, which was modified, special moulds made and the glass fibre bodies fitted out.
-
Pit Stop refuelling and wheel change simulator – requirement was to provide a complete Pit Stop simulator to mimic the F1 refuelling rig and also allow for wheel changing. In effect to form a complete Pit Stop challenge unit. We developed bespoke electronics modules to allow entry of how many litres of fuel, mimic the feeling of fuel flowing and run the countdown of the Fuel input LED’s on the hose. In addition real hose fittings are used and we built the frame work of the unit with fitted air compressors and undertook all electrics to current safety standards.
-
55% scale - Ford Focus WRC simulators – requirement was to supply a reduced scale version of the Ford Focus WRC car, yet enable adults as well as children to fit in.The units also had to include Force feed back controls and work with PC and Playstation systems. Considerable time was spent getting the ergonomics right and all work was again undertaken from photographs.
Design and 3D CAD facilities:-
We utilise the latest 3D CAD Unigraphics software from EDS, running on HP workstations and have the facility to interface/exchange data directly with client CAD systems using for example - STEP203, STEP 214, IGES, DXF, DWG, PARASOLID, STL files.
We can from this software use various Rapid prototyping techniques to ensure very quick turnarounds and highly accurate models.
Our design department has considerable experience of working within the car manufacturing and racing environments and we would be pleased to discuss any design requirements.
Special Equipment
Our experience in the simulation business has shown that the real success of a simulator is not based just on the vehicle itself, but on the environment it sits in. Therefore Sound and Vision and Movement play varying degrees of importance, most of which are not what you may expect. In the supply of our simulators we are able to draw upon years of experience and give practical advice on what works and ensure you do waste money on unnecessary items. We spend considerable time keeping up with new technology and testing it out.
Visual technology – We can supply all types of display devices from:-
LCD, Plasma screens, Projectors, Wrap around screens such as CAVES and Eyeglasses.
Sound technology - We utilise very hi quality sound systems and amplifiers with sub bases to give extra feeling and reality. These can also provide output for surrounding external sound systems where required.
Control technology – We are constantly developing new technologies for driving controls, to provide increased realism in performance and our experience means we are world leaders in this area. In most cases our requirements are so demanding that we have to design our own sensors, Force feedback motors, etc. to provide cost effective solutions. We have a number of Patents now in this area.
Professional Driver training controls are available for most requirements or under development. These include Force Feedback options on Steering and feedback systems on Pedals, Gear changers and handbrakes.
Motion technology - Motion Bases are being touted as essential requirements for realistic simulation, but our experience indicates it need not be essential. Nothing exists at present that realistically sustains the movements and forces that vehicles generate. We have therefore taken the decision to work on the development of such a system and to select from a range of movement bases that will best suit requirements.
Movement Options include the following:-
1. Actuators fitted to actual car
2. 3 or 6 degrees of freedom bases on which cars sit.
3. Force Feedback turntables on which the front wheels of the car sit.
4. Purpose built units in combination
